On 16th March, 1915 the 1st Coldstream Guards of 1 Brigade, 1st Division, left their billets in Le Touret and moved into trenches at Rue du Bois just to the south of Fleurbaix. Ernest Arnold was killed on their last day here, 22nd March, which was described by the battalion diary as being a quiet day and with no mention of any casualties. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries.
